It drops 1 to 2 octaves over a one measure depending on the BPM of the tune, at full bandwidth and 3 times the samples volume, engulfing the stage and audience, like a slow dive bomb synth. It is a sample flange effect! I would hit a low note, sample it for one sec with a momentary switch with the flanger. Absolutely brutal volume combo.Īlso went the Ultra to Ax II route, BUT there is still one effect from the 2120 that I can't seem to recreate on the AXE II. Obviously, the power amp modeling on the AFX2 is a MILLION times better than it was on the Standard, though, so perhaps that's not true anymore.Ĭlick to expand.I had the same 2/100 rectifier amp too, matched with a Mesa over sized 4 x 12 cab. I haven't tried that with my AFX2, but with my old AFX Standard, I never felt that I could get the right sound with a SS power amp. If you can pick up a solid state power amp cheaply, that would be a good way to compare and see whether you need the Mesa. You can dial out the power amp simulation on the AFX2's amp sims while continuing to use the Mesa, and that might be a good way to start with it. That shouldn't be surprising, given the rapid development of technology and the high amount of processing power the AFX2 uses.ĭespite all the people saying "you don't need that Mesa power amp anymore," I would say hold off on taking that out of your rig. The 2101/2112/2120 are great pieces of gear, but I think the AFX2 blows them away in every aspect.
However, I just used it DI for studio stuff, which is also what I do with the AFX2.
